In the mood for a free short story? You can check out my short horror story “Feeding Lizzie” at http://bookpumper.com/2011/05/feeding-lizzie-photo-flash-fiction/

The story is flash fiction based on the photo in the post at their site – just click the link and you’ll go right to the story and see the photo. Trouble is afoot for the folks in the picture… lurching, hungry trouble.

While you are at bookPumper.com, check out some of the other photo flash fiction that’s available from some great writers. It is fun to see how different writers tackled the same picture and just how different the stories truly are. You’ll find some good stuff!

PS – This weekend I plan on doing a few little updates on the site, and I might even have time to do another post on some aspects of forensics, as I did in my post on luminol.

The dead return to life, infect people, spread their nasty disease. You run for your life . . . or walk quickly depending on whether they are Romero’s shambling undead or the new, upgraded sprinting model. Sounds horrible, doesn’t it? Well, you’re just not looking at the bright side. Let’s see what good things can come from the inevitable zombie uprising.

Number 1 – You no longer need to worry about paying your credit card bills or your mortgage on time. I have it on good authority that zombies will go after creditors first, followed immediately by a buffet of all those people who are ‘holding you down’ followed with a dessert of your boss, who is probably one of those people holding you down.

Number 2 – The cost of housing will plummet. When there aren’t any more of those pesky people filling up all those fancy houses, you can have your pick of living quarters. Don’t worry about working hard; good things come to those who loot.

Number 3 – Reinvent yourself! Sure, you work in a cube now, but the other survivors don’t need to know about your former life. Be careful not to claim that you were a sharpshooter on SWAT, the explosives guy on ANY Michael Bay film, or anything like that – people will expect you to live up to your invented reputation when the hordes of undead start breaking down your shelter. See, you don’t have to try to live an interesting life now. Just wait for the zombies and then create one.

Number 4 – Tired of updating your status on Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace (are people still there), and every other social networking site known to humankind? Well, running from zombies is a good excuse to skip a few posts.

Number 5 – No more sparkling vampires. Nothing more really needs to be said about that.

I’m sure others have listed all the great things about the coming zombie apocalypse. This is my take. What have I missed?

Sunday, after a nice hike up, down, and around Torrey Pines State Reserve*, I had the opportunity to meet Peter Krause, an incredible artist and a very nice fellow. For those who don’t know, Mr. Krause was a fulltime artist for DC comics for a decade, drawing such iconic heroes as Superman and Captain Marvel.

He’s now working with comic book writer Mark Waid on the comic book Irredeemable, from Boom! Studios. Here’s the basic concept: Imagine Superman, pissed off at the world, and deciding to become the world’s greatest supervillain. Irredeemable is like that, but better. It’s darker than you might think too, which really appealed to my inner horror writer.

Waid’s story is stellar and the art is wonderful. I finished off the first four issues (collected into one volume) in one sitting. I can’t wait to read more, and I hope all you comic lovers out there do the same.

Zombie lovers: you can get a fix of Zombie Tales from Boom! Studios. They have a TON of other great properties too.

*My apologies to Peter if I looked (and perhaps smelled) as though I’d just come back from a mysterious island run by a man named Jacob and home to a smoke monster. That’s right, Lost is over, but I’m still gonna reference it.

I’ve got quite a bit going on right now. I’m always scrambling for freelance work, but I have quite a few other projects in the works as well.

I’m writing a novel called Dawn of the Pale Riders, which is a zombie western set in the near future. It is a prequel to my story “Ballad of the Pale Riders”, and a sequel to my story “Meat City”. Both of those stories are in my upcoming collection from Black Bed Sheet Books called Meat City & Other Stories.

I’m also writing a proposal for a comic book series (tentatively) titled Aberrant Nation.

In addition, I’m working on an urban fantasy serial novella that I will post on this site. I won’t start posting the chapters until I have the entire story written though. It just seems better that way.

I’ve got a few other projects lined up as well, but I’m currently too tired to mention them all.
